Taking Taranaki Farmers’ Market to the next level

The Taranaki Farmers’ Market has ambitions to be one of the best Farmers’ Markets in New Zealand, connecting passionate local growers and producers with the Taranaki community.

A recent study, commissioned in partnership with Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki, the regional development agency, sought public feedback to understand how the Taranaki Farmers’ Market could maximise its future success as a vibrant community event. Currently held every Sunday at the Huatoki Plaza, the Farmers’ Market is aiming to grow by attracting more visitors and more stallholders.

The study asked respondents a range of questions, including how they travelled to the market, how long they visited for, and open questions about what could be improved, among others. Over 350 responses were received, showing how passionate people are about the potential of the market,  which resulted in some valuable insights into how the market could improve in the coming years.

Key findings from the study include:

  • The case for increasing the size of the market is very strong, with respondents wanting an even wider choice of produce and stalls.

  • Further consideration should be given to alternative locations that would enable the growth of the market, with Huatoki Plaza currently limiting expansion.

  • Messaging and education relating to the benefits of farmers markets for producers and customers should be continued and amplified.

  • Wider sector development support (beyond the farmers market) is required to enable the emergence and growth of food and beverage producers in region.
